We just came back from a trip to Heilongjiang. We learnt from people of the Northeastern Forestry University (東北林業大學) that there is a breeding colony of tens of pairs out in a remote island in Liaoning. Reporters of the Magazine "Wild Animals" (野生動物)published by the University is going to visit the colony in mid-May. If confirmed, they will help setting up a reserve there.

Published in latest issue of 野生動物 (Ye Sheng Dong Wu 2004; 25(4): 25-26) is a report of breeding colony of BFS in a remote island in Shi Shing Islands (石城島), Liaoning. There are photos showing 4 BFS in breeding plumage on a rock, one BFS at its nest on a cliff and 6 flying BFS. Besides BFS, Swinhoe's egret, Black-tailed gull and herring gull also breeds there. Apparently, a provincial status nature reserve has been approved to be set up in the island and surround sea.
