Dear Axel,

Thank you for the photo - it is really puzzling. The Black-faced Spoonbill should have another larger colored band on its right leg. However, the bird in the photo obviously did not have one.

The possible identify of the bird according to our record is either one of the below, or a bird banded by an unknown party:

- A09 banded in Hong Kong on 27 February 1998. Red-Yellow bands on left leg but it should also have one big green band on the left leg. It can be ruled out as this bird did not carry any transmitters.

-A21 banded in Hong Kong on 11 January 1999. Green/Red/Yellow bands on the left and a large green on the right. the bird had a transmitter on its back, but should have dropped off (and the two green bands shouldn't!). Unlikely.

-T13 banded in Taiwan on 9 January 1999. Red/yellow on the left but should have a big blue band on the right. Again, this bird can be ruled out as it did not have a transmitter.

-T26 banded in Taiwan on 18 February 2003. brown/Yellow on the left and a big brown on the right. Again, this bird can be ruled out as it did not
have a transmitter.

If the yellow band on the left is actually a soiled white band, there are some other possibilities. All except T16 should be ruled out as they did not carry any transmitters. T16 has to lose its big blue band too, which sounds a bit unlikely.

The only record of a BFS that hasn't got a color band on the right, carried a transmitter and has a combination that could be interpreted as red-yellow on the left is a bird banded in Tainan on 21 December 1998. But, the bird is DEAD.

I could not answer your question. But is Juergen sure that the BFS of the two photos were the same individual? Does he have better photos?

Best wishes,

Simba
