Below is a press release from AFCD received at 6:00pm 17/3/2004: Re-opening of Mai Po Nature Reserve ********************************************* The Government announced today (17 March 2004) that the Mai Po Nature Reserve will be re-opened to visitors with effect from tomorrow (18 March 2004). The Mai Po Nature Reserve has been temporarily closed to visitors since 31 January as part of the precautionary measures adopted to minimize human contact with birds. “As the avian influenza outbreak situation in the region has started to ease off, the Government has decided to re-open the Mai Po Nature Reserve to the public,” a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said. “Members of the public should remain alert. They should observe good personal hygiene and avoid contact with wild birds and their droppings. They should wash hands thoroughly after contact with wild birds and their droppings,” the spokesman added. “AFCD will work closely with the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong to ensure that sufficient precautionary measures are taken on the management side.” AFCD has been maintaining a stringent monitoring regime on wild birds in the Mai Po Nature Reserve and collecting faecal samples for H5 avian influenza tests since winter 2002. Up to now, no abnormality has been observed. “We will continue with the surveillance of wild birds and remain vigilant,” the spokesman said. ********************************************* ENDS/Wednesday, 17 March,2004
