News of Bird Island, Qinghai

The bird flu deaths of goose and gulls at Koko Nor, Qinghai, China has some impact to visiting birders. Bird Island (Niao Dao), a breeding area and popular tourist/birding site on the west side of the lake, is now closed to visitors. It is likely the closure will remain in effect for the remainer of the season. It is still possible to see, with some difficulty, some of the lake's birds along the south shore of Lake Koko Nor along Road 109. Know that this major road runs some distance from
the shore and almost all the land between the road and shore is fenced
off. Viewing is less than ideal!
