Title: Black-eared Kite VS Black Kite? Post by Forrest FONG on Oct 9th, 2002, 9:27pm In the Photo Gallery Forum, 648 has posted several stunning photos of two Black-eared Kites fighting violently in the air. :o However, the posted message mentioned them as Black Kite (黑鳶) instead of Black-eared Kites. According to the Birds of HK and S China, Black-eared Kites (Milvus lineatus) and Black Kite (M. migrans) are considered as two separate species. :o Grateful if anyone can tell what is the differecne between them? and whether the birds shown in 648's photos should be Black Kite or Black-eared Kite? ??? P.S. as mentioned by 648, the photos were taken at Tsim Bei Tsui on last Sunday. http://photo.ap.net.tw/album/ph_22144/a_20021008200434/f_20021008200704.jpg 648兄,對不起!偷了你的相片一用。 |

Title: Re: Black-eared Kite VS Black Kite? Post by Justin_Jansen on Oct 9th, 2002, 9:43pm Hi, I know there are few lines about the id of Black-eared and Black Kite in the Forsman guide! Maybe try to solve the problem in there. The bill and underwing patron is different in Black-eared as far as I know! Cheers, Justin |

Title: Re: Black-eared Kite VS Black Kite? Post by Rupert Griffiths on Oct 12th, 2002, 4:33pm In Hong Kong we get the race lineatus of the Black Kite (Milvus migrans lineatus). Some authors seperated this race of the black kite into a different species - the black-eared Kite (Milvus lineatus) but I think that this has not been accepted by many authorities. So in Hong Kong whether you call it the black-eared kite or the black kite you are talking about the same species. There are not any other races of black kite occuring near to Hong Kong. |
