Why not a Shrike?

Also, would you have a picture to show the upperpart?

Thanks for the respond, I didn't have upperparts shots.  What kind of Shrike do you supposed?

It looks like a first-winter Bull-headed Shrike, on the basis of warm gingery-brown overall coloration, especially distinctive on the underparts, the very weak brown, not black mask, and the very indistinct supercilium.

Good record. Please submit to Records Committee with photos.

Mike Turnbull.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for the ID, would it possibly be a Brown Shrike (juvenile)?

Regards,
Etta

Etta,

To answer your question, no it could not be a first-winter (juveniles would have moulted to first-winter plumage by now) Brown Shrike because the crown is too rufescent, and this is not shown by any subspecies of Brown.  Do you have any photographs of the upperparts?  If so, the mantle should show a distinct greyish tone (although this can be very dull on first-winter females), and the there appears to be a hint of this in the photos.

A good find, only the second I have heard of this winter.

Paul

Dear Paul,

Thanks for the lead.

It was Beta Yip spotted the bird.  I afraid no upperparts had photographed, would have him describes the behavior for reference.

More information: its size is like a bull-headed or brown shrike, and its feet is not deep in color.  Also, as you can see in the photo, its bill is not the sharp one, and that excludes the possibility that it's Rufous-tailed robin.

When in the field, the scale-like pattern on its chest was pretty clear. The encounter was brief, just long enough for Etta to take the photo. It flied from the top of one pole to another like a shrike.  As for the color of the mantle, I would describe it as grey-brownish, and this is my impression of the overall color of the bird. Certainly, its head is browner than its mantle.
