Title: Question about the Slaty-legged Crake
Post by Koel_Ko on Apr 18th, 2003, 5:39pm
The avifauna mentions that the crake has a dinstinctive two-note call. Could anybody please tell me what that call is like? In addition, will the BWS organize trips in the future for night birding, especially for seeing this crake? :-/

Like many crakes this species is extremely difficult to see and almost all records are of birds heard calling.

However migrants occasionally turn up in odd places where people can see them - there was one in Kowloon Park during the spring a few years ago.

The streams of the NT hold calling birds for several weeks and I have heard them in Lam Tsuen at Ng Tung Chai Village this year.

However a night birding trip would be a good idea - looking for nightjars and owls (very hard to see too!).

You should also take care to seperate the call from Red-winged Crested Cuckoo, which also has a two note call "toot  . . . toot".  As Simon points out Slaty-legged Crake goes "Tarp  Tarp" It is a rougher sound and more quickly given than the precise and sweetercall of the cuckoo.

Cheers
