Title: Crested goshawk - help with ID Post by koren on Apr 23rd, 2003, 5:48pm Hi, I have seen what I think is a crested goshawk a few times where I live near Tai Po. (Sorry, no photos!) The main distinguishing mark is the white patches on the sides of the rump. There is a dark strip down the middle of the rump (when seen from above) and the rest is white. Is this a crested goshawk I am seeing? If so, why don't any field guides show this white as it is the main thing I can see when it is flying. I have also seen it occasionally do a funny fluttering motion while flying. Thanks for any ID help. Koren |

Title: Re: Crested goshawk - help with ID Post by Koel_Ko on Apr 26th, 2003, 8:16pm The white fluffy patches along the rump of the bird and the fluttering motion are both near-diagnostic features of the Crested Goshawk as far as I understand; the latter is a territorial display. :) |
