Title: Bird Sound ID
Post by Forrest FONG on Jun 4th, 2003, 1:35am
Below is a message received by HKBWS for bird id. Anyone please help!

Dear sir or madam

I do hate to send such a vague enquiry but I have to know the name of a bird I hear all the time on Lamma Island. I have listened to all of your audio files and it certainly isn't one of those. The only way I can describe it is to say it goes.do do do dodo do do do the same note twice - then the next note rises and the fourth note falls. I hear it on the beach and when on people's rooftops - but I only hear it in lamma...can you please please help identify it... I have never seen it so can only describe its song.

Kindest regards

Yours hopefully

Alison

I think it is a Lesser Coucal (小鴉鵑).  You may check its call from the Bird Call webpage - 17th item:

小 鴉 鵑 (Centropus bengalensis) (142 KB)

The audio recording contains a few instances of the "four notes" you mentioned, and one sample of "do do do dodo". Usually you would hear the two sets in an alternating pattern.

The bird can also be found in other other places in Hong Kong, e.g. Ho Chung.

Some photos of it can be found at the website below:
