Title: Birding in Australia
Post by Eugene on Aug 1st, 2003, 12:37pm
Dear birders,

We have the chance to visit Australia in late August this year.
Could anyone give us some birding itinery, bodies, guides or agents in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns area or any special places)?  Besides, what reference would you recommend?

Thanks a lot!

Happy birding, cheers!

Eugene

Hello Eugene,

I spent a week in Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands in August 1995.The birds are colourful and quite easy to see around there. There are lots of birds in front of the esplanade in the centre of Cairns. Highlights of the trip were Chris Dahlbergs' River Tour from Daintree, where I stayed at Red Mill House, which has Little and Azure Kingfishers coming to a pond in the garden. Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge has a lot of good birds coming to the fruit they put out for them. You can do this area quite comfortably in your own hire car, probably cheaper than a formal tour. Kingfisher Park can also put you in touch with Lloyd Nielsen , a well-known guide who lives in nearby Mount Molloy, who I hired for a day.

There is a place called Cassowary House which is said to be good, but I missed it

Also in Queensland, Lamington National Park is a good area, several hours' drive from Brisbane. Two places there are famously Bird-oriented;

A good index for trip reports for Australia (and anywhere else) can be found at;

It is easy to get Australian Field Guides in High Street Bookshops in Australia. The one by the Slaters is the most pocketable, I bought Simpson and Day in Port Douglas.

You can refer to my article in the HKBWS bulletin 183 2002 Spring issue.
A more detailed account of my trip can be seen in the English version. You may also visit the website at http://www.abberton.org   if you are interested in birding around Brisbane area.
Cheers.

TH Kwan :)

Dear everyone,

Thanks for your kind advice.
I am really sorry that I could not have enough time to travel to many places this time, so I can only spend a few days in Sydney.  I will take your suggestions and do some birding as far as I can.  Good luck to us.

Happy birding, everyone!

Eugene
