Title: Birding route : Peak to HKU campus via Pokfulam Rd
Post by AL on Jan 23rd, 2004, 5:48pm
;) Kung Hei Fai Choi ~

The following record was taken today from 8:00am to 12:00pm. The route provided here is around the Peak and the Pokfulam area, and yet difficult to be described precisely as most of the places and trails have no name indeed.  As a beginner, I am very happy to see a number of species which are so "uncommon" to me along this route.

route (actually a cyclic route) :
HKU -> PinewoodBattery -> juntion with hatton road -> (back to) P. Battery -> on the way to Garden No.1 -> short cut to Pokfield Rd. -> HKU

species seen :
1. Spotted Dove  珠頸斑鳩

2. Koel  噪鵑
(1, female, at HKU campus)

3. Yellow-crested Cockatoo 小葵花鳳頭鸚鵡
(>1, should be sulphurea, seen at HKU campus and near Pokfulam road)

4. Crested Bulbul   紅耳鵯

5. Chinese Bulbul   白頭鵯

6. Chestnut Bulbul   栗背短腳鵯
(>4, on the way to Pokfield Rd.)

7. Magpie Robin

8. Red-flanked Bluetail 紅(月劦)藍尾鴝
(1, female, near Pinewood Battery)

9. Violet-whistling thrush 紫嘯鶇

10. Yellow-bellied Prinia 灰頭鷦鶯

11. Common tailorbird 長尾縫葉鶯 (possibly)

12. Black-faced Laughing Thrush 黑臉噪(眉鳥)
(large group which can commonly found near University Drive)

13. Black-throated Laughing Thrush 黑喉噪(眉鳥)
(at least 3 groups, the population spread all over the Peak hillside)

14. Striated Yuhina 栗頭鳳(眉鳥)
(1 group, >4, on the way to Pokfulam Road, active around a solitary Yellow-created Cockatoo on top of canopy)

15. Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker 朱背啄花鳥
(1, female, very obvious crimson rump, on the way to Pokfield Road)

16. Japanese White-eye 相思

17. Chestnut-Flanked White-eye 紅(月劦)繡眼鳥
(suspected, the chestnut is not obvious yet the outlook of the white eye-ring and whiter belly contrast with normal Japanese White-eye)

18. Grey Treepie 灰樹鵲
(1 obviously seen, should be a member of a large group, noisy. The white marking on the wings, white part near rump and the long tail are very distinct. On the way to Pokfield Road)

19. Black-necked Starling 黑領椋鳥

20. Hill Myna 鷯哥
(>2, at HKU campus)

It seems that while most of the record shown here was taken at NT, especially in TPK and MP, the large ignorance of HK Island provides a positive drive to me and to those who live in HK island to explore a better route for more uncommon species in HK island. hehe  ;D

It's really happy to see so many species in one morning  ;D ;D ;D

People sometimes wonder which records are worth submitting.

From this list I'd suggest:

Chestnut Bulbuls (still establishing themselves on HK Island)

Bluetail (all winter migrants are worth submitting)

Striated Yuhina (scarce bird!)

Flowerpecker (scarce on HKI though perhaps increasing)

maybe the Hill Mynas (Cat E, but helps to maintain a record of what could perhaps become a self-sustaing population, though never has until now).

Higher than usual counts of the Cockatoo, B-thr L. Thrush and the Treepie should also be submitted, though the numbers mentioned here are not unusual.

The latter three species are all worth monitoring for various reasons. The Cockatoo is a critically endangered bird in its natural range, and origins and true status of the Laughingthrush are unknown, as is the case with the west HK Island populaton of Treepie.

There are a lot of birds to be found on HK Island - in a good winter the Hatton Road/HKU/Pokfulam area can hold lots of thrushes and chats, and Mount Austin can be brilliant in the autumn (end August to mid December), especially  in the early part of the morning if you can make it.

Of course, I forgot to mention that the Chest.fl White-eye would be worth submitting, but you'd really want to see "ox-blood" on the flanks to be sure.
