Other than the commonly used "Birds of Hong Kong and South China", which books do you recommend? I prefer photos to drawings.

Also, where to buy them?

Wait for the Photographic Field Guide that will be published by the Society soon. Sometimes limited copies of popular photo field guides can be obtained at the Project Office.

Except ordering through the web, where can I buy "Shorebirds - An Identification Guide to the Waders of the World"?

If the only way is to order online, which website is the best and most safe?

Also, any other suggestions for identifying shorebirds?

It is more easy to buy bird books throught online bookshops. You can also ask the book shop in Hong Kong whether they can help ordering it for you. But it is only a bit cheaper than internet book shop and you need to wait for two to three months. Sometimes, the order will be cancelled!

However, the information in the shorebird is a bit outdated now as it was written in 1986.

I was told that it is never-ending of buying bird books. Also, I have seen many bird books which is available in university and public libraries. You may go to check them there first and decide whether to buy or not.

However, getting a bird book cannot help you to identify all the birds at once. Bird watchers still needs to go out to the field (not only sitting in home watching the books!), make good and detail observations of birds, and field notes. Think about what are the main features of the birds for identification. Then cross-check with the bird. Some time later, you will get some experience and know the way how to identify the birds.

Isaac Chan,

I got a Japanese Photographic Guide of 550 Shore birds which is suggested to me by an experienced birder.
I ordered it from the Jap. Book store on the top floor of Sogo. Within two weeks they called us to pick up the order.

Actually, it comes in a set with another book of 550 Woodland Birds.

I find it quite helpful in identifying wild birds. It shows plumage of different seasons, ages & sexes.  They have both the English name & scientific name to refer to.

Yes, that's the one. I also bought the one on the right hand side next to 590. Both shore & woodland birds in one book for carrying out to field. ;)
