Title: Found in the city - what is this? Post by Denise on May 2nd, 2004, 12:37am Hello! A friend and I found this bird next to a construction site in Causeway Bay a few days ago: http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/webcreeper/News/bird1%20040502.jpg http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/webcreeper/News/bird2%20040502.jpg http://www.hkbws.org.hk/fileServer/webcreeper/News/bird3%20040503.jpg We think it's a juvenile because it couldn't fly or even stand properly, but I don't know much about the birds of Hong Kong and am curious what species this is. I've never seen a bird like this before! Is it common? Thank you for your help! :) Denise |

Title: Re: Found in the city - what is this? Post by Denise on May 2nd, 2004, 1:01pm Thanks, Carmen! I've just done a bit of research on the koel - so that's what happens to your children when you don't look after them yourself! ;) Denise PS. Thank you for fixing my pictures, Webcreeper! |

Title: Re: Found in the city - what is this? Post by Denise on May 3rd, 2004, 6:08pm We're not really sure - when we checked back a few hours later, it had disappeared! :o I don't know what happened to it...I hope it didn't get carried off by a cat or something. :'( Denise |

Title: Re: Found in the city - what is this? Post by Webcreeper on May 3rd, 2004, 8:40pm I hope it has survived. We can give injured or stranded birds a better chance by reporting the case immediately to the AFCD (tel. 2150 6927 or 2150 6990) or the Kadoorie Farm (2488 1317) Here are some success stories: Sam the Brown Fish Owl http://www.hkbws.org.hk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Conservation;action=display;num=1070720682 |

Title: Re: Found in the city - what is this? Post by Denise on May 3rd, 2004, 11:54pm Thanks for the links, Webcreeper, I really enjoyed them - especially the one about Sam the Brown Fish Owl! He really is a striking bird. I'd LOVE to see one in person! I've written down the phone numbers you gave me...I'd never have thought to call a hotline for help! It's a pity because last summer I found a baby Tree Sparrow that definitely needed help. (Click here (http://www.idenise.net/weblog/week_2003_07_06.php#001241) if you'd like to read about it...it's quite sad.) Denise |

Title: Re: Found in the city - what is this? Post by Webcreeper on May 4th, 2004, 11:52pm The numbers are not hotlines to be exact, but I think they would provide help when needed. Welcome to BBS membership! :) |
