Post by Lynx on Oct 22nd, 2004, 10:26pm
This one was seen at Long Valley today (22 Oct 04):

Is it an oriental skylark or a fantail warbler?

Thanks very much for your help!

thanks Koel!

Do you mind telling me the key factor in identifying this bird?  Is it mainly the shape of the bill?

Hello.
The fantail warblers I see are usually brighter than this, but the facial pattern and tail shape are distinctive. The tail is 'fanned', slightly grauated and short.
Also, the tiny size and behaviour can be useful - the bird always flutters with its tail flicking up and down before dropping into vegetation. ;)
