Title: A Dead Bird on the Road Post by bfspoonbill on Dec 7th, 2004, 9:32am This morning, a dead bird was found on the road in Shatin SLY-SM. http://everwell.dynu.com:3880/BirdWatching/DeadBird/DeadBird%20200412070848%20ShatinSLY-s.jpg (Full size image at http://everwell.dynu.com:3880/BirdWatching/DeadBird/DeadBird%20200412070848%20ShatinSLY.JPG) http://everwell.dynu.com:3880/BirdWatching/DeadBird/DeadBird-Head%20200412070848%20ShatinSLY-s.jpg (Full size image at http://everwell.dynu.com:3880/BirdWatching/DeadBird/DeadBird-Head%20200412070848%20ShatinSLY.JPG) Head to beak tip length was about 50mm. http://everwell.dynu.com:3880/BirdWatching/DeadBird/DeadBird-Back%20200412070848%20ShatinSLY.jpg I think it is a baby black kite. But I have no experience on this kind. Am I right? |

Title: Re: A Dead Bird on the Road Post by Etta on Dec 7th, 2004, 11:11am Dear bfspoonbill, Thanks for your information. However, I afraid that it was not a Black Kite, the exact identification will leave to the birders and experts. Just a tips, a method that I found useful in the field work: for a quick reference such as the size of a bird carcass, we could put a pen or a dollar note by the object and take a photo, this is good for the size reference. Of course, a ruler would be great. ;D My two cents. :) Etta |

Title: Re: A Dead Bird on the Road Post by bfspoonbill on Dec 7th, 2004, 11:27am Thanks to Etta and Pippenho. I only got a DC on hand and went back to the spot. Maybe I should put my tissue pack in pocket or even my watch onto the busy road floor. I also wondered the dissimilarities about its size (even a baby), colour and beak with black kite. But I could not link it up with an adult Lesser Coucal because of the dark black head of adult. I do not have guide book on hand till now. So, it is only a "random guess". Anyway, thanks for pointing out. I am trying to search for a photo of baby Lesser Coucal for reference / comparison. If you know any URL, please tell me. |

Title: Re: A Dead Bird on the Road Post by pippenho on Dec 7th, 2004, 12:50pm Herehttp://www.orientalbirdimages.org/birdimages.php?p=3&action=birdspecies&Bird_ID=471&Bird_Family_ID=&pagesize=1 and maybe it's a non-breeding adult as well http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/birdimages.php?p=4&action=birdspecies&Bird_ID=471&Bird_Family_ID=&pagesize=1 I have checked from the net and I think it is a juvenile as you can see the dark stripes on the wings. I am a beginner, please correct me if I am wrong. ;D |

Title: Re: A Dead Bird on the Road Post by bfspoonbill on Dec 7th, 2004, 4:37pm Thanks. The image in first link looks close to the dead bird, although there is no size information from the link. But I think the approx. 8-inch body should be a juvenile instead of baby. I am thinking ... why did the juvenile die? ..... It's a pity! I was really sad when I saw it in the morning. :'( http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/birdimages.php is the site I have forgotten. I saw it here long ago. |

Title: Re: A Dead Bird on the Road Post by Webcreeper on Dec 8th, 2004, 12:57pm Please refer to this link (http://www.hkbws.org.hk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Conservation;action=display;num=1100610470) If you find any dead bird in the field, call the AFCD warden on duty. They will come to pick up the carcass for analysis. |
