Oh my God! The photographic fallout from Sunday's momentous outing seems to go from bad to worse. Having been on the trip and not having seen Ho-fai's "Cormorant", I'm now very concerned about the second image in particular, which seems to show a Red (Grey) Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius). The first appears to be just Red-necked of which we saw c 150 or more. However, to my eye, the second bird shows a shorter,  slightly thicker bill, where the presence of some yellow at the base suggests Red Phal. I assume it was photographed on the outing on Sunday, and if so was this the bird we circled around but failed to get much closer to, which looked different (amongst one or two others)?

I agree that this is a Red Phalarope - as the previous post states the bill is too thick for Red-necked and there is yellow at the base.

Hi Allen,

Can you in fact remember, is this the bird which I, one of the gwailo on board, suggested we circle to get better views of because it had very thick bill. It was when we got the best views of the second Pom. We're fully happy now that bird was a Grey Phal. but just want to know if this is a photo of it.

Thanks,

Mike T.

Hi Mike,

Sorry, I didn't remember.
Thank you very much for your identification that the bird of second photo is a Grey Phal. I'm also very happy that I have captured this photo.

Hi Mike,

The phalarope in the above photos was the one you pointed to us to look at and suggested we circled to get better views of.

I think it should be the same bird captured by Allen.
I am sure that you have got one more tick by seeing this Grey Phalarope. ::)

Thank you so much for finding out this single tiny bird amongst many red-necked phalaropes swimming together in the rumpled sea. :-*

Thanks Forrest for absolute confirmation that this is the bird we looked at.

In fact when I picked it up initially because it was hunched up and had a thicker-based bill it almost looked like a small grey petrel sitting on the sea.
