Title: Curlew with unknown
Post by Neil on Oct 5th, 2005, 6:30am
Photographed yesterday at MPNR.  At first I thought Curlew Sandpiper but the color didn't look right.  Could it be a Dunlin?

It could.

The black spots on the belly are the remains of the breeding plumage.

Also the bill is shorter than Curlew Sandpiper

Cute picture.

Cheers

It is a Dunlin, but it is juvenile not and adult with reatined summer plumage.  The small black spots on the belly are typical of a juvenile, as are the dark throat and the narrow pale fringes to the lower scapulars.
