Title: Warbler ID please Post by Lynx on Oct 9th, 2005, 2:17pm These warblers were spotted at Tai Po Kau this morning (9 Oct 05). Are they Eastern Crowned Warblers? http://www.9014316.com/birds/CRW_2711.jpg http://www.9014316.com/birds/CRW_2717.jpg http://www.9014316.com/birds/CRW_2728.jpg |

Title: Re: Warbler ID please Post by HF_Cheung on Oct 10th, 2005, 3:14pm Yes, I think they are Eastern Crowned Warbler. The reasons are: 1. Although the crown is not seen well, it is a larger leaf warbler (judging from the size of the head relative to the body). It has a long body that is similar to that of Arctic Warbler, but the tail appear a bit longer (wing tip further up the tail). 2. On colour, it has two clear thin wingbars (unlike most Arctic and Pale-legged Leaf Warbler). 3. Its lower mandible appears to be totally orange in colour (a very good feather of Eastern Crowned). 4. its paler underparts compared to Arctic, and I think there are also light yellow on the vent (difficult to see clearly). These are good supporting features for Eastern Crowned. 5. The legs are dark enough to eliminate Pale-legged Leaf Warbler. Please add more if you notice more field marks. HF Cheung |

Title: Re: Warbler ID please Post by johnallcock on Oct 10th, 2005, 4:33pm There was a slight influx of Eastern Crowned Warblers into Tai Po Kau yesterday. I saw at least five different individuals. However I saw no arctic warblers and only one pale-legged/Sakhalin leaf warbler, both of which are usually commoner than Eastern Crowned! |

Title: Re: Warbler ID please Post by Lynx on Oct 10th, 2005, 7:18pm Thanks very much Mr. Cheung and Mr. Johnallcock's input. The field observation I can add is that the warblers are relative larger than yellow-browed warblers and less active. That's why I could take several photos of them. There was no noticeable voice heard. |
