Post by Webcreeper on Dec 15th, 2005, 8:13pm

Post by Uncle_Tall on Dec 15th, 2005, 11:16pm The dark bar in the leading edge of the underwing is diagnostic. The undertail may not be red. The red tail is more obvious for perching adult birds. |

Post by Falcon on Dec 23rd, 2005, 11:36am Stunning!! ;D very nice capture... ;) But all of the light phase Red-Tailed Hawk pictures i have seen so far have white throat, could this be another race of Red-Tailed Hawk?? or is it just the different variable plumage like a lot of Common Buzzards?? ???... |

Post by subbuteo71 on Dec 23rd, 2005, 7:19pm The Sibley Guide has a very similar bird illustrated- it is a Western light adult and has a dark throat. Beautiful picture! Did you find American birds tame compared to Hong Kong? I am always amazed at how approachable they are- I've had Blue Jays eating out of may hand and chickadees landing on my hat. Any bird to try that here would probably be from a cage or soon in one! ::) |

Post by JanJ on Dec 24th, 2005, 6:49am Hi all! Red-tailed Hawk is a variable raptor, both geographicly and individualy. One usually distinguish between six light-morph forms (Eastern, Florida, Fuertes, Alaskan and Kriders) and three dark-morph forms (dark, dark intermediate, and rufous morphs) Here is an Eastern adult to compare to FC excellent image:http://www.47custer.com/2004/rt_hawk011704/rt_hawk/2.htm Notice that Western RTH generally are darker than Eastern, and besides having dark throats, they are more rufous on the underside and usually have a more obvious belly band and barred leg feathers.
