Pipit photos taken at Long Valley Thursday 12th Jan and Tuesday 17th Jan. May be the same or two different birds.

Looks like Buff-bellied Pipit to me, of the locally occurring race japonicus.  Elimination of the massively more commonly occurring Red-throated is based on the almost entirely unstreaked upperparts, thickly streaked underparts, slightly more striking wingbars (?) and perhaps behaviour (photo 3) - maybe I'm wrong but Buff-bellied does seem to spend more time in mud and water than Red-throated, which tends to be in short crop fields and slightly drier situations.

Water Pipit, of which there is one accepted but as yet unpublished record for HK, can be eliminated on a number of grounds including the upperpart and underpart patterning, and both bill and leg colour.

Thanks.

This pipit seems to like the wet fields in the north east corner of Long Valley, often across the river in the fields going north towards the border fence. Sometimes on its own, sometimes with a large flock of Red-throated Pipits. On its own, it's quite easy to approach but with other pipits, its difficult to get close to.
