Title: Tern??? Post by Steenheilesen on Feb 8th, 2006, 8:08pm Nikon D70, lens 300mm VR f2.8 Captured: 08 Feb. 2006 Can someone make an ID on those birds. I guess it's a kind of Terns. I captured them in Sai Kung harbour. http://images4.fotop.net/albums3/Steenheilesen/ternbird/birds_5353_s2.jpg |

Title: Re: Tern??? Post by little_dolphin on Feb 8th, 2006, 9:31pm They are plovers, not terns. I'd say they are Little Ringed Plover, because of the a complete white collar around the neck of each bird and a complete black breast band beneath the white collar. |

Title: Re: Tern??? Post by Steenheilesen on Feb 8th, 2006, 9:48pm Sorry about the missing link. It's should be ok now. Thanks for the reply, I also found them too small. They suddently show up and settle down on the rocks. But a beautiful scenery to see them flying around. |

Title: Re: Tern??? Post by Koel_Ko on Feb 15th, 2006, 6:14am Actually they look like Kentish - note absence of eyering, black feet, reddish crown on a few of them, and if you zoom the pic in the breastband is incomplete. |

Title: Re: Tern??? Post by miket on Feb 15th, 2006, 10:29pm I think they're Kentish too - small nos. are fairly regular during migration periods at least, just east of Sai Kung harbour at the beach off the old Beach Resort Hotel. Of course any picture you might have showing the upperwing would clinch this - Kentish has a wing-bar and LRP does not. Mike Turnbull |

Title: Re: Tern??? Post by little_dolphin on Feb 15th, 2006, 11:44pm Oh... Thanks Koel and Mike. I tried zooming in the picture but still can't see the breast-band clearly. |

Title: Re: Tern??? Post by Steenheilesen on Feb 18th, 2006, 10:27pm I have checked how a Kentish look like and Koel_Ko seems to be right. Thanks to you all. |
