Title: Snipe at MPNR

Digiscoped at MPNR yesterday. He came out from the grass for a few minutes and then disappeared again. Is it a Common Snipe? Neil.

Neil,
Was this bird in the freshwater near the SE corner of the reserve? By the description of his behaviour I was looking at him on Sunday. There were very prominent markings along the back and a brightly coloured chestnut tail. In spite of the latter (Solitary Snipe?) I was sure he was a Common Snipe. Let us see if the experts agree.

Just being curious, what are those birds next to the snipe?

It looks like a Common Snipe to me.

One good way to separate them from swinhoe's & Pintail is the length of the bill. Common is almost always the longest-billed - the bill being twice the length of the head or longer.

So far there ar no records of Solitary Snipe for Hong Kong.

Most of the other birds are Common Greenshank and the more heavily spotted bird sleeping on the ground on the left o the pic is Marsh Sandpiper.
