Title: Burmese Shrike in Wuyuan, Jiangxi?
Post by HF_Cheung on Jul 3rd, 2006, 8:31pm
These two photos are by Lim Jianxing at Wuyuan, Jiangxi in May(?) 2006, using 30D and 400 mm/f5.6 lens.  No color adjustment has been made.

This strange looking bird is not a Brown Strike.  I think this is a Burmese Shrike.  The only problem with this is that Burmese Shrike is recorded only from Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong according to Mackinnon.  However, I am not aware of any recent records from Guangdong, and not even from Guangxi and Quizhou.  Given that the birds in Wuyuan has a very close link to bird from Yunnan, I am willing to bet on it.  So this is a first for Jiangxi.

Any differences in opinion are welcome.

I think it is an adult male Tiger Shrike.  Burmese Shrike would have a dark tail and a white primary patch.

Thanks Paul.

The Burmese Shrikes available on the photo galleries shows black tail, and pale base to the bill.  Tiger Shrike have all black bill, and a larger bill size.

I guess the problem with this one is that the "tiger stripes" on the wing and back shows very poorly.  The angle of the photo also have something to do with it.  The colour on the wing, back and breast, and also the black mask on the face do fit Tiger Shrike better.
