Title: Please help ID. Common Redshank?
Post by ckn on Aug 21st, 2006, 5:52pm
Please help ID the juvenile bird.

Is it a Common Redshank or Long-billed Dowitcher?

It's a Common Redshank. Although the upper-tail, upper-tail covert and rear flank markings vaguely resemble a Dowitcher's, those are the only similarities. Long-billed Dowitchers have shorter, greenish legs and a longer bill  (also greenish at the base), plus a longer clearer supercilium, for example.
