Title: Yellow-Browed Bunting?
Post by Lester_Bull on Oct 3rd, 2006, 9:24pm
On 22nd September i posted to birline, Yellow Breasted Bunting at Long Valley. Now i am back in the UK and looking through my snaps. I now believe the bird to be a Yellow-Browed Bunting. I post it here for your comments.

I have enlarged the image, as much as i can without distortion.

Hi Lester,

Strongly rusty tones to mantle, tertials and rump don't seem right for Yellow-breasted to me, nor does the thickness of the streaking below and the well-marked malar (?) stripe.

Yellow-browed - juvenile, presumably - seems the most likely id to me, but I too look forward to hearing from others.

Mike

Maybe the strong rusty tones to the mantel and rump indicate that it could be a Tristram's Bunting?

Tristram's is clearly the only other possibility really, and you may well be right, HK_Twitcher, that the clearly rusty rump more strongly suggests that species.

Unusual encounters with juvenile buntings seem to be a bit of a feature of this rather unusual autumn so far.

Hi guys
Thanks your comments. If i blow the picture up on my pc a yellow eye-brow is obvious, it runs about 70% of the supercilium from the bill. The rest is white.
Also the white edge on the median coverts suggests a wing bar, similar to the illustration in Viney, Philips and Ying.
Also the thickness of the streaking also seem to suggest Yellow-browed if using the same reference book.
i would be happy to send you the original picture. Just let me have yr email if interested.

I think the clean white underparts also favour yellow-browed over tristram's bunting, which should be more rufous below.
Habitat also suggests yellow-browed.

I do think this looks more like Yellow-browed, and maybe the rusty rump isn't rusty enough for Tristram's in fact.

Tristram's have been seen in unusual places (eg. Ho Chung fields and Sandy Bay) during migration, but location does favour the much scarcer Yellow-browed.

Mike Turnbull.
