After searching the internet and books, i think i will give up and let the experts ID this.

Firstly the scales points out that this is a juv bird.
The brown plummage leads me to Brown Shrike instantly but somehow the grey head doesn't associate with brown shrike. Did saw images of brown shrikes with grey head but would like to hear some explanation on this.
The tail is not dark enough to be a Long Tailed Shrike as well.
I do hav a back view of it and it shows no 'tiger stripes'.

Burmese, Bull headed, Dusky, Large Wood seems to be too rare and i am not really familiar with them.

Would appreciate some help on this
thx so much   ;D

Long tail, a clear white eyebrow, pale colour on the base of beak, could it be a female/immature brown shrike (lucionensis)?

Hmmm. . .

This is an interesting bird, especially the combination of the grey head and dark mask , but with the brown barred flanks and brown back.

I think I agree with Bond that it is most likely a Brown Shrike.

Look at the picture of Brown Shrike by Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne in Oriental Bird Images. Even though the back is a different colour the head pattern is rather similar.

Do you have pix from other angles? it would be interesting to see them even if the quality is not as good as on this pic.

Although I haven't seen one in the field quite like this myself, I think it does look like a 'fairly' normal female lucionensis Brown Shrike. The not quite solid black ear coverts and especially the lores, combined with the pale based bill and distinct flank markings are indicative of a female and the birds plumage combined with the very short outer tail feather (which is visible in the back view) all point to Brown Shrike for me.

Then again we don't get too many to study here in the UK!

Cheers,

Ian
