Title: Lung Fu Shan and the Peak
Post by Koel_Ko on Mar 2nd, 2003, 2:36pm
A trip was made to the PEAK on 1-3-03, with the following birds recorded:
- Up to 25 Collared Sivas at Lung Fu Shan
- Short-tailed Bush Warbler
- Up to 4 Black-throated Laughingthrushes
- Grey-backed Thrush, male and female
- Japanese Thrush male
- Pale Thrush, male and female
- Blyth's Leaf Warbler
- Crested Serpent Eagle, at least 2
- Crested Goshwawk, 2
- More than 4 Pacific Swifts
- Imperial Eagle with 4 Kites as assailers
- Greater Necklaced Laughingthrush

- Weird flycatcher-like, slender bird lingering for some time in the canopy with greyish head, silky-white underparts, rufous vents and tail, and a plain face with dark eyes and bill; size smaller than nearby thrushes and larger than warblers. Could anybody please give comments on its identity?

Hi Koel

An excellent morning at Lung Fu Shan!

Your wierd flycatcher-like bird sounds interesting. The combination of reddish vent and tail  does not leave many options!  The nearest I can think of is female Pale Blue Flycatcher , but that does not show a reddish vent.

Sorry I can't be more help

Mike

Dear Mike,
Thanks for the reply. The sighting was actually a glimpse of a bird lingering at the treetops along Lugard Road. Nearby were some Thrushes and many Chinese bulbuls, and the bird was quite featureless from below, save for the reddish vent and tail. I had a glimpse of the head and found it greyish (not sure whether it was the light) and  nondescript. We have considered it a minivet or a monarch but found the colours inconsistent, but there is indeed a very remote possibility for a Paradise Flycatcher.
