Title: Long Valley Full of birds
Post by Mike Kilburn on Sep 26th, 2003, 11:21pm
After several days of easterly winds Long Valley was very good this afternoon between 4:45 and 6:45

Hobby:                                2
Black-winged Stilt :             1
Swintail Snipe :                  30
Common Snipe :                  8
Painted Snipe :                    2
Daurian Starling:              at least 50 (only for 10 minutes)
Black-necked Starling :     140
Wryneck :                             1
Black-winged Cuckoo-shrike 1
Plaintive Cuckoo:                  1
Dusky Warbler :                    1
Oriental Reed Warbler:         3
Lanceolated Warbler:           1
Black Drongo :                       5
Collared Crow:                      2

All the birds were in the area around the lotus ponds and the marsh to the west. I also saw a numer of common species and migrants in cluding 180 Little Egret flying over high up, Common and Wood Sandpiper, 3 Stonechat and  Yellow Wagtail, several White-breasted Waterhen, Chinese Pond Heron, Night Heron, Great and Cattle Egret and  White-throated Kingfisher.

Also today there was a Grey-headed Lapwing at Lok Ma Chau Village, and 7 very approachable Whiskered Terns on the Mai Po Access Road fishponds (we drove to within 10 meteres of birds perched on wires.

I will lead a Society outing to Long Valley on Saturday 4 October from 1500.  Lets hope its as good as today! Please call me on 2555 6237 to let me know if you are coming.

Mike
