Title: Lesser Shortwing at Ng Tung Chai
Post by Mike Kilburn on Oct 21st, 2003, 8:32pm
This morning I had brief views of a Lesser Shortwing close to the small farm below the Man Duk Yuen Temple.

It was in the area of the small stream which crosses under the path just after the big archway, around 0810. I stopped because I heard a bird singing  very beautifully, but only saw a pair of Rufous-capped Babblers.

However about 30m further up the hill I saw a small bird in the dark bushes below the path. It had a short but broad and distinct white supercilium above the eye, but not  and the rest of the bird looked small and dark chocolate brown.

Since Lesser Shortwing breeds on the higher parts of ai Mo Shan it seems likely that this bird had descended for the winter. Last winter Lesser Shortwing was seen and heard along Shek Kong Catchment, which has a similar altitude to this part of Ng Tung Chai.

On the way down I also heard  a Grey Treepie.

One more bonus - no cobras today!

Mike

Hi Mike,

I would like to ask about the status of Mountain Tailorbird in Hong Kong.

One is seen at Tai Po Kau recently as well. Moreover there was winter record in the past two years.

tks,
kwan

The status of Mtn Tailorbird is still under consideration by the Records Committee. It seems that there are records from "Good" locations like Ng Tung chai and Tai po and others from less reliable spots in lowland areas.

However it is known to occur on Wutong Shan, just across the border from Robin's Nest (near Sha Tau Kok) as it was found there by a Kadoorie Farm Ecological assessment team.

Naturally I would like it to become a Category A species!

Cheers
Mike

This morning TWO Lesser Shortwings were heard singing in the same place at Ng Tung Chai, although they were not seen today.

Cheers
Mike
