Title: »Z¥x®qªº²r¸V Raptor on Po Toi Island
Post by bfspoonbill on Nov 8th, 2003, 10:33pm
Sorry, my English (special terms for bird) is not good enough to describe fully the unknown raptor on Po Toi island.

I think it should be a Bonelli's Eagle. ;)

Thanks for the brain-storming idea, no matter whether it is a correct guess or not.

BTW, do you have (or do you know any site has) any photo of this bird, both from the bottom and from the top? The sketch inside "Birds of HK and Southern China" is a bit different from what I saw. It would be helpful if I can compare with a photo of real bird.

Would it be Osprey?

Thanks for your links and suggestions. I've reviewed all the images.

The "finger" of the common buzzard photo is not as obvious as the one I saw. The major white colour of the body from bottom view apparently fit the observation though. But the dark lines on the white area were not seen. Maybe it was due to too small image from 8X binocular. I'm not sure. But the much curvy rear part of Buzzard's wings is apparently wrong. The end of the Buzzard's tail is not as light as seen.

The Bonelli's Eagle does fit better for the shape, especially the wings and the "fingers". But the end of tail is not light in colour.

If there is any in-flight juvenile White-Bellied Sea Eagle photo, it may be more helpful.

It should be "not smaller than" an adult kite. Buzzard or osprey is a bit smaller.

If it is to be osprey, the brownish colour (both light and darker) and white/brown pattern on the top part of the wings have to be explained.

But anyway, it would be the best if experienced birder can advise what raptor species they have seen on Po Toi.
