Title: Band-bellied Crake at KFBG
Post by Mike Kilburn on Nov 18th, 2003, 2:46pm
Yesterday Kadoorie Farm Rescue Centre received a Band-bellied Crake  found in Mong Kok.

This is the third record for Hong Kong and the first record of a live bird which, provided it stays healthy, will be returned to the wild.

It is likely to be released at Mai Po on Thursday afternoon, subject to the condition of the bird.

Please listen to English Birdline for the confirmed time and location of the release.

Thanks for the info. This bird is really rare in HK.

However, why just the English birdline??? How about the Chinese one?

Mr Kilburn, are you the spokesperson of Kadoorie Farm? Is English the only official language of your organization? The majority of chinese-speaking people here can be ignored?

Clarification of facts:

I am not the spokesman of KFBG,  I am a birdwatcher who works at KFBG. I simply wanted to share the information about a good bird.

KFBG does not have an "official language", but with staff from many cultures the languages commonly used are Chinese and English.

KFBG issued a press release in English and Chinese. Several Chinese publications covered the story

I had no part in the story because public relations is not my job at KFBG.

Why only English Birdline?  Answer: Chinese birdline is not updated as regularly.

It is my understanding that Chinese Birdline and English Birdline have somewhat different styles and often report different birds.

I appreciate the concern  for sharing information about birds with both Chinese and English-speaking members. If anyone would like to help HKBWS to share information you could help in 2 ways:

1. Listen to English Birdline every day and Chinese Birdline every day and pass information from one to the other.

2. Translate messages on the bulletin board from Chinese to English or English to Chinese.

Both of these would be a valuable service for all HKBWS members.

Please contact me if you would like to volunteer to help the Society in this way.
