Title: Re: Society Outing to Long Valley Post by Mike Kilburn on Oct 6th, 2003, 9:39am Hi Lynx A great set of pix to represent the birds we saw that day! However I will point out that your picture of Wood Sandpiper is a actually a Green Sandpiper. Why? a)The colour of the back and wings is a plain green with no streaks or spots. b) The breast band is gery-green and also plain with no streaks or spots. c) If you compare with the Common Sandpiper above you will see that the white of the breast extends up towards the back of Common Sand, but not on Green Sand. d) This picture heavily emphasises the white supercilium in front of the eye which Green Sandpiper can show, but which may suggest Wood Sandpiper. This is a good example of the need to check more than one feature before making an identity. Cheers Mike |
