Title: surprise birds on fishponds 榮基村魚塘有驚喜 Post by Mike_Kilburn on Jul 29th, 2004, 2:39pm On Tuesday a Chestnut-winged Cuckoo flew over fishponds at Wing Kei Tsuen and a nest of Chinese Starling was found there. On Wednesday four Chinese Grosbeaks were found at Mai Po Sun Tsuen. They have also been seen a few days before on the other side of the village. They were not seen closely, but it is suspected that this is a family party. Anyone birding in this area is requested to check if any of the birds are juveniles, which may have bred nearby. Also several juvenile Azure-winged Magpies were seen in the same area. Cheers Mike |

Title: Re: surprise birds on fishponds Post by John Allcock on Jul 30th, 2004, 9:56am It seems very possible that the Grosbeaks have been breeding locally. This year, there have been 2-3 pairs in the Sha Po/Kam Tin area (at least 1 raised chicks) and a family group seen at Lok Ma Chau. It seems they are colonising Hong Kong. I will keep my eyes open for the birds at Mai Po. John |
