This was one of the raptors recorded on that day.
We thought it was a Besra but could it be a grey-faced buzzard? ???
Thanks!

I think it is a Grey-faced Buzzard. Wing shape is somewhat pointed that is wrong for accipiter (i.e. sparrowhawk). Wings are long and tail is comparatively short.

Hi Tung,

Yes, I remember that the size of it was much larger than an accipiter.

Thanks a lot for clarifying the id.

what were they looking at?

They were looking at the Bamboo Snake ¥Õ®B¦Ë¸«C¡]«C¦Ë³D¡^

Other outing members had taken a lot of photos of them & the Grey-faced Buzzard. I beleive their photos are much better than the photos I posted.

I think this is a Greater Green Snake.

Most people refer to the highly venomous White-lipped Pit Viper as Bamboo Snake.

The one in the photo has a head which is the same width as the body, while the viper has a broad-based head which looks wider than the neck.

The viper also has a red eye, while Greater Green Snake has a black eye.

Incidentally Ng Tung Chai has been good for amphibians in the last few days - The best was one Spotted Narrow-mouthed Frog , but also Lesser Spiny Frog  bred in a concrete storm drain near the big gateway for the temple, and Hong Kong Newt was in the same pol, also one oter frog I have not yet identified. My colleague alo found eggs of green Cascade Frog and saw Hong Kong Cascade Frog at Ng Tung Chai last weekend.

Cheers

Dear Mr Kilburn,

Thanks for your clarification. After comparing the above photos with pictures of the bamboo snake (white-lipped pit viper) and the greater green snake, the snake we saw looks more like the latter one.

Here are more information and pictures of the bamboo snake and the greater green snake for our member's reference:

Greater Green Snake »A«C³D (http://www.hkbiodiversity.net/apps/popup_record.asp?id=3135〈=en)
Bamboo Snake ¥Õ®B¦Ë¸«C (http://www.hkbiodiversity.net/apps/popup_record.asp?id=3445〈=en)

By the way, the greater green snake is non-venomous.

here are two pics of the Bamboo snake taken in Wonderland Villas on 8-10-2003. Please note the triangular head, the red eyes and the red tail.  :)
