Title: Mai Po 米埔 2005 Autumn 秋 Post by Mike Kilburn on Aug 20th, 2005, 11:05pm Waders and bitterns at Mai Po 20/8/2005 On Thursday there was a good selection of waders at Mai Po as well as 6 each of Yellow Bittern and Striated Heron. One good thing about all the rain is that any waders arriving in HK will stay until the weather clears up. Its also a good time to look for Black Bittern. The best place for the herons was the waterfowl collection, where 2 juvenile Yellow Bitterns were climbing around a bare tree on an island to the left of the central causeway. An adult Striated Heron also showed well here. Among the numerous waders were one or two each of Bar-tailed Godwit, Grey-tailed Tattler and Terek Sandpiper, as wel as 3 Asiatic Dowitchers. Also on the Scrape were 2 Black-headed Gulls that Bena of WWF have been present all summer - an unusual record. There was also a male Silky Starling seen in the carpark near the Education Centre. The Black-faced Spoonbill which has been summering was not seen. Cheers Mike K |

Title: Re: Waders and bitterns at Mai Po Post by johnallcock on Aug 22nd, 2005, 2:51pm Mike's prediction regarding waders at Mai Po proved to be correct. The heavy rain combined with very high daytime tides resulted in large numbers of waders on the scrape yesterday morning. These included the highest ever autumn counts (according to the Avifauna) for Red-necked stint (329 birds), Terek sandpiper (230), Asian Dowitcher (28) and Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (17) as well as high counts for Whimbrel (175) and Curlew Sandpiper (98). Also present was a single Little Stint - the first autumn record in Hong Kong. Although the tides are slightly lower in the coming days it may be worth visiting the scrape to see if these birds remain! |
