By the way, there's an Eastern Crowned Warbler that morning as well (7 Sept). Thanks Koel for the identification.

At noon there's a juvenile Chinese Cobra (²´Ãè³D) in the water drain next to the road near the entrance to the reserve. There was another snake on the road above the Red walk but sadly it was dead. :(

Little Dolphin :)

22nd October 2005

3.5 hrs in TPK produced remarkably little today. Best sighting was a male Grey-throated minivet feeding a female. A Grey-cheeked fulvetta didn't really rescue my morning. Neither did a flock of Rufous-capped babblers although Mr Kilburn will be pleased to learn that they respond to pishing as well in TPK as they do at NTC.
An Olive-backed pipit and a Grey wagtail finished off the morning. Everyone I spoke to suffered the same dearth of birds.

24/10

Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon, Kestrel and Crested Goshawk (all in the Ho Lek Pui valley area within 30 minutes)

Greater-Necklaced Laughing Thrush x 10 (ridge road)

Large Cuckoo-Shrike (?) x 1....it flew around at the top of Tai Po Kau from tree to tree for about 30 minutes and certainly looked like one, and called like one endlessly (refer to the recording on mangoverde.com)...another one seemed to reply to it as well.

Can any expert let me know if this is a reasonable record for HK in late-Oct ?  Many, many thanks!

I am not expert, but i would like to ask why did you think it was a Large Cuckoo-shrike. Male or Female? Any descriptions on the bird you have seen.
I think Ashy Drongo is one of the regular wintering birds in Tai Po Kau. Its habit is usually standing on the top of tree to fly-catch the insects in the air.

It is grateful if it is really a Large Cuckoo-shrike and we hope to see and find it !

Hi George....thanks for the reply.

It was a male Large Cuckoo-Shrike, and showed quite well on 4 or 5 occasions as it moved from tree to tree and across the ridge road on a couple of occasions.
Whitish belly, grey upperparts with blackish wings/wingtips, blackish facial area, size was about right as well. It was also seen on a couple of occasions by my father who was with me.

It called a few times a minute, for about 30 minutes as it moved around.  The call is exactly the same as the one on the mangoverde.com site, which was apparently recorded in Taiwan. The bird was found at the top of the road intersection (closest towards the Ho Lek Pui hill area), between what I call the "Ridge Road" and the steep road which goes down toward an intersection with the Brown/Yellow Walk. The time was between 1600-1630 hours. It eventually moved down into the wooded valley towards the slopes of Grassy Hill.

I went there today, with a camera, but no luck( of course !), this time at 1030-1130 a.m.Nothing notable seen apart from 3 Crested Goshawks (one in Ho Lek Pui, and two over TPK), and another unidentified raptor.

Hope this helps someone with seeing it and re-confirming the ID!!!

Is it possible for you to provide a map grid reference for this sighting of Large Cuckoo-shrike? Or some more detail as to where it was?

Also, if you buy a copy of 'The Avifauna of Hong Kong', essential reference for birders in HK, you'll find the answer to your question. Which is that it would be a first !

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for replying.  The best map that I can find is on the following link.

http://parks.afcd.gov.hk/tourist/images/map/m58.pdf

If you follow the "Yellow Walk" all the way to the south part of the map, where it intersects with a road, go a bit more south (actually up a steep road) and where it intersects with another road at an inverted T-Junction (on the map, this is about 200m due East of the Fire Lookout) is the exact area.

It is no easier getting there from Fo Tan, as it is another bit of a hike, and probably a reason why it may not be too "well-birded". Hope that you find it !
