Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by johnallcock on Dec 16th, 2005, 1:13pm A nice selection of good birds, especially the grey-headed flycatcher! I saw a brown shrike in this area on several dates in late Oct/early Nov and wondered if it might be planning on spending the winter. It seems that it has! At that time, I thought the site had a certain amount of potential but I couldn't find much else around. |

Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by John Holmes on Dec 16th, 2005, 9:23pm For the benefit of people who haven't been there yet, I think the site might be better described as "The *nullah to the south of Airfield Road". The eastern end is the best, near Shui Lau Tin. And you can walk along the south side of the drainage channel and get reasonable views of birds in the trees on the other side. There are many Chinese Hackberry (Celtis sinensis Pers.) that seem to attract a lot of wintering birds, as well as the flowing water. Always seems to be good in cold weather. *nullah - concrete drainage channel. |

If you are coming from Tai Po take Kam Tin Road to the round about at the east of Kam Tin Village, that is the western end of the runway. Left on Tung Wui Road for 50m and then left on to Airfield Road, you need to drive down there about 2Km (It's not a restricted road). The Shek Kong PLA Camp is on the left and the concrete nullah should be on your right. Plenty of room to park on the side of the road. If you are coming along Kam Sheung Road Shui Lau Tin Village is close, but like a lot of villages, parking might be problematic. Good Luck! John |

Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by John Holmes on Jan 12th, 2006, 4:21pm Hello Pan, The 77K bus goes from Sheung Shui down the Fan Kam Road to Shek Kong. Apart from Sheung Shui KCR I'm not sure where else this bus can be found in Sheung Shui. :) If the 77k goes on to West Rail Kam Sheung Road station, you should get off at the first stop on Tung Wui Road (that is, immediately after the roundabout at the end of the runway). You will still have a fifteen minute walk down Airfield Road. John |

Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by johnallcock on Jan 13th, 2006, 1:08pm A number of buses and minibuses run along Kam Sheung Road eg 64K. I'm not sure if any of these go to/from Sheung Shui. If you get off around Tsang UK Tsuen/Nam Hing Lei/Lai Uk Tsuen, access to the airfield road area is easy via the nullah. Incidentally, also in this area, there is an area of farmland that seems fairly promising south of Tsang Uk Tsuen. I recorded white-shouldered starling and greater painted-snipe breeding here last summer. |

Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by Captain on Jan 13th, 2006, 2:45pm Try a red minibus running between Sheung Shui and Yuen Long. The terminus is next to the Cafe de Coral and Jockey Club on San Fung Ave. It is also next to the KMB bus depot. The red minibus passes through Shek Kong and Kam Tin. You could stop at the big runabout before Kam Tin. Captain |

Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by johnallcock on Mar 15th, 2006, 5:20pm On the southern side of the nullah (Shui Lau Tin), there is a section of path on unpaved road. On Saturday, the common rosefinch were on the western end of this (ie closest to Kam Tin). The painted-snipe are in a wet area (waste from the pig farm) in agricultural land at the eastern end (they are usually standing under the fallen dead tree - be quiet to avoid distubing them!) and the dusky thrush is in an area of wet agriculture directly across the nullah from the snipe (several of the fields have black shade-cloth) |

I thought I knew this area but I'm not sure where John is referring to above - unless he is referring to the eastern end of the nullah where the road stops and a dirt track continues past a house and garden. I haven't explored past the second house you come to. dave |

Title: Re: Airfield Road, Shek Kong, N.T. ·s¬É ¥Û±^ ¾÷³õ¸ Post by Mike Kilburn on Mar 16th, 2006, 2:19pm You need to keep going along the dirt track that runs along the nullah until you see a bridge across it to the left. Cross this bridge and turn right to find some flields covered with black plastic. turn right along the path and the Dusky Thrushes have been seen in the tree and fields to the left of the path. To find the Painted Snip pool recross the bridge and turn left (or go straight on along the same path as before if you did not cross the bridge). You will come to a dead end road sourrounded by railings which is a little higher than the level of the path. On the right just before the road are some tall dead bushes with a small path passing underneath them. This brings you to the end of the stinky pond. Approach slowly as the Painted Snipe often hide very close to this corner. You can also follow the path around the pond, which also attracts starlings and Wood Sandpipers. A male Japanese Thrush and Brown Shrike have also been seen in the same area Cheers Mike K |
