An Azure-Winged Magpie was seen in Tsuen Wan coastal area in this afternoon.

The Avifauna of Hong Kong still mentioned it as uncommon even though it has built up population in MPNR. Now, it is also found elsewhere in HK. The more updated book A Photographic Guide to the Birds of HK also mentioned occurrence of this occasional visitor in MPNR only.

Is there any more updated information about this bird in HK?

Perhaps the bird at Tsuen Wan is a new escape.

Sorry, but this bird is rarely seen in cage by me. Actually, the cage must be very large. How common is it being fed in cage in HK? How will people keep it? Its call is nothing attractive to me. What's the reason of keeping it as pet? Or, do you mean it is an escape from a large public cage (bird park)? Which one has this kind?

According to A Field Guide to the Birds of China, Hong Kong is outside the natural range of this species. So the bird at Tsuen Wan should either be an escape / released bird, or has strayed from the small group at Mai Po. The Avifauna of Hong Kong says these birds are extremely sedentory so I suppose the probability of escape is higher.

I'm not sure how popular it is as a cage bird.

Noted with thanks for replies from Owen and Webcreeper. I think it will be interesting to know spread of (rare) birds, apart from IDing and taking good photos of them. I just wonder whether HKBWS has more updated statistics, even though very preliminary, about the birds in HK. I'm not expert in Biology or related. But it will be very interesting to know more about birds' life. On the other hand, it is understood that the Avifauna took "years" to prepare. The authors had paid a lot of efforts.

Page 98 of Hong Kong Bird Report 1998:

"Four adults and three juveniles were at Tung Chung on 2 July, and one was seen on several dates on 5 October."

Can't find similar entry in the HK Bird Report 1999 & 2000.

Bird Reports for later years are in preparation. Perhaps we may also have something from the Winter Bird Survey. You may like to have a look when these are published. :)

Hi bfspoonbill,

Thank you for reporting the sighting of Azure-Winged Magpie in Tsuen Wan.

Other than the Avifauna of HK and the Photographic Guide to the birds of HK, HKBWS has, from time to time, published the latest HK bird news in the Bulletin and Annual Bird Report. Not just bird id and photos, Members can share their birding records in the BBS. This is the purpose of having this forum for reporting bird records. If members are interested in any rare species r special record, they can send a request to our Records Committtee for any available data.

To help us preparing and updating the statistics, members' support on submission of their sight records is also required. Therefore, I would like to remind members to submit their birding records to our Records Committee. Detail of the submission is mentioned in the website below:
