Lam Tsuen - January 4th & 5th

January 4th -

Golden Triangle - late afternoon

Blue-winged Minla - 2
Pallas's Leaf Warbler - 1
Grey-headed Flycacher - 1
Black-naped Monarch - 1
Yellow-bellied Tits - c.8

(Also reported by other observers: a female Thick-billed Pigeon in the afternoon (Andrew Smith); a Verditer Flycatcher in the morning (Mike Turnbull).

She Shan - late afternoon

Siberian Stonechat - 1
Common Blackbird - 1
White-browed Laughingthrush - 2
Dusky Warbler - 1
Hume's Leaf Warbler - 1
Black-faced Bunting - 1+
Yellow-fronted Canary - 1

(Also reported in the morning in same area: a Crested Goshawk and a Common Rosefinch (MT))

January 5th - 3.45-5.15 pm

Golden Triangle

Thick-billed Pigeon - 1F
Yellow-bellied Tits - c.8

Directions for Thick-billed Pigeon: from the main road, take the access road into the wooded area. Turn right along the road signposted to Tong Sheung Tsuen. Almost immediately after this turn there is a fruiting fig tree on the left. This afternoon the bird was perched inconspicuously (easy to miss!!) in the right hand side of the tree - MT pointed it out to me!!

She Shan area

Crested Goshawk - 1
Hume's Leaf Warbler - 1

Directions: take the concrete path (not the road!!) from the main road towards She Shan. Halfway between the road and the village, before you get to the large bamboo clump, there is a a grey box next to the path containing an electric meter. PL 00325 is painted in white on the box. The Hume's Leaf Warbler feeds opposite here in the vegetation to the left of the path. It is a vocal bird, often giving a short monosyllabic 'peest' call. Usually present between 4-5 p.m.

Well done, I missed the pigeon!  What time were you there?  I did see grey-backed thrush and red-flanked bluetail below the fig tree, plenty of bulbuls feeding.  Also saw yellow-bellied tit, Asian brown flycatcher, blue-winged minla and velvet-fronted nuthatch in that immediate area.  Across the valley (further up from She Shan Tsuen) were 18 Striated Yuhinas and an Ashy Drongo.

Maybe tomorrow...

Interestingly, the Red-flanked Bluetail is a new arrival. I also saw one in Penfold Park this afternoon and there were 5 at Ng Tung Chai today which suggests an influx into the territory due to the NE monsoon.

I haven't seen Striated Yuhinas in the LTV this winter, so they too may be new arrivals. I saw a party of 40+ at Lower Shing Mun this lunchtime, which may also be indicative of an influx......

Makes you wonder what else might have come in..!!

As for the pigeon, on the 4th & 5th it was in the tree in the afternoon (between 3.30 & 4.30, I think!!) But you have to look hard - Kwan's excellent photo makes it look easy, but it can be very inconspicuous amongst the foliage.

any chance that it was the same bird observed one year ago?

Just to bring the picture right up to date, the pigeon was there again late this afternoon (6th) in the same tree.

Going off topic re LTV, but concerning possible influxes, I saw 5 Bluetails in Ng Tung Chai this morning (but didn't report them so someone else must have had that count too). Got to say, apart from that it was deadly dull.

The Female thick-billed pigeon was seen again this morning at about 8pm, again sitting very quietly in the same tree.

The Yellow-bellied Tit flock and 3 Grey-backed Thrushes were also present at the same time.

In relation to the comment about Striated Yuhinas, there have been sporadic sightings of Striated Yuhina at Ng Tung Chai since September, so the birds at She she may just be visitors from further up the valley - the numbers are about the same.

Cheers

George -

I can understand your disappointment but you still had some interesting birds - especially Grey-capped Greenfinch, which is  a pretty rare bird in HK these days.

And Siberian Rubythroats are not to be scoffed at either!!

I visited the trees the garbage collection pt of Golden Triangle (i.e. near Tong Ha Tsuen, Kwan Yick Store) at about 1:15 PM 9 Jan. Within just 30 mins, I saw a lot of birds, except the thick-billed pigeon

- Grey-headed Flycatcher     x probably 2
- Yellow-bellied Tit                x at least 1
- White-bellied Yuhina          x at least 1
- Blue-winged Minla              x >10
- Scarlet Minivet                    x 2-3
- Verdicter Flycatcher            x 1
- Asian Brown Flycatcher      x 1
- Emerald Dove                    x 1
- Pallas's Leaf Warbler         x 2-3

Not too bad in the middle of a day.

The Thick-billed Pigeon was seen again today around lunchtime - it even moved a little - but only to eat some figs in the tree.

With the help from a group of 4 birdwatchers, I ticked the thick-billed pigeon yesterday, just using only 5 mins.

Ha Ha.... and many thanks for the 4 birdwatchers.

Are you the one come to Golden Triangle with Mr. Mike K.?
You are so very lucky. You arrived just after a few minute I found the Green Pigeon.  It was very difficult to find because it has almost no movement in the tree. I used half an hour to look around the tree, then discovered it.

For your information. A botanist said the fruiting tree is a Ficus tree (Ficus superba; 黄葛樹)

The pigeon was very active, feeding in mid level directly over the road.  It was moving around a great deal and eating a lot!  Only took me ten visits to see it.

Lam Tsuen Valley - Feb 12th, afternoon

Rather quiet with no sign of the Plumbeous Redstart or Yellow-bellied Tits, but the Hume's Leaf Warbler was again at She Shan in the usual spot.

In the Golden Triangle, near the new marzipan-like yellow & white house (adjacent to the main road) there is a large tree in fruit. It was full of bulbuls this p.m. and could well be worth checking if you're birding in the area.
