Hot news:

An Orange-breasted Green Pigeon was found on Po Toi at arond 11am.

Yu Yat Tung has asked me to spread the news as quickly as possible.

Please note there is an HKBWWS outing to Po Toi tomorrow and also public ferries from Aberdeen (8:00 am), Stanley (10 & 11:30 am) and North Point ( 9:15 am).

There was no sign of the Chinese Song Thrush by 12:15, but that may change - check Birdline this evening - 2667 4537 or further updates on this BBS.

The Chinese Thrush was eventually seen under a banyan tree, next to an abandoned football field, 5 minutes from the pier.

Other birds seen on the island included:

Scaly Thrush - 1
Grey-backed Thrush - c.10
Asian Stubtail - 2
Brown Shrike - 2
Red-flanked Bluetail - 5 (1 M)
Daurian Redstart - 5 (2 M)
Black Bulbul - 4

The Oranged-breasted Pigeon was well seen on a bare branch above the school, but only briefly in the afternoon.

There are boats frm Aberdeen on Tues, Thurs & Sat at 9 am.

I've booked a place on the trip to Po Toi tomorrow- I just want to confirm the location of the pier- is it the one off the main road (beside the park) that runs through Aberdeen ie not the Jumbo restaurant pier?

Hope the weather stays reasonable tomorrow but not so good the visitors leave.

Re mid-week ferry times from Aberdeen to Po Toi.

Correction to Mike Kilburn's response.

The boats leave the Chung Kee ferry terminal at Aberdeen (next to the fish market) at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. return from Po Toi at 2pm.

Did you remember the discussion on Po Toi Island for doing conservation purpose-project today at lunchtime? I think it is now a good chance for generating the ¡¥noise¡¦ you mentioned on the public.

The content can be many rare and new bird species discovered in Po Toi Island in HK such as new species for Drongo Cuckoo, Japanese Cormorant, Chinese Thrush and Orange-breasted Green Pigeon and rare species for Swinhoe¡¦s Minivet, Green-backed Flycatcher, Japanese Paradise Flycatcher and so on. Hence, Po Toi Island may become established as an important location/habitat for the birds especially the migrant and rare bird species.

What do you think? Would it be possible to practice it in real condition?

Given the Government and public concern over H5N1, it may not be a good time to publicise Po Toi as a bird migration hot-spot.

Perhaps better to keep it to ourselves for now.

I'd agree with Geoff, and I think the local businesses (restaurants and ferry/tour operators) would too.

Does Po Toi face some new development threat? A few years ago there was some possibility of a power station being built there I seem to recall.

It seems the Orange-breasted Green Pigeon has been seen 3-4 times recently since its first appearance and subsequent disappearance!!

Could anyone (Geoff Welch??) say whereabouts the bird has been seen recently and at what time of day??

To my knowledge, the Green Pigeon has been seen twice since its first sighting on 18th Feb, that is on 26th Feb and again yesterday (7th March) when it was seen and photographed by Kwok Jai and friend. So clearly this bird has a different character to the Chinese Thrush which seems determined to be seen and photographed by everyone in every different position.

On the last two times the pigeon has been seen, it was sitting in a tree about halfway up the hillside next to the small restaurant which is at the top of the steps on the pathway to the east side of the island. If you stand at the restaurant and look up the hillside, you will see some graves about halfway up, this is the area to search. I think the bird has been seen around midday but that's probably because of ferry times.

4 of us searched the whole area for 3 hours today and failed to find the bird. I will be going again tomorrow and Friday, I will report back if the bird reappears.

Other birds at Po Toi today, Chinese Thrush and Russet Bush Warbler heard calling from the long grass beside the small restaurant. Also 20 Heuglin's Gulls in the East Lamma Channel and 140 in the West Lamma Channel.
