08.30 - 12.30

Two Siskins were seen in the tall trees on the right hand side of the access road opposite the nature trail.

They are feeding on the fruits but are hard to find and can disappear for long periods

They were seen in the same area on Saturday.

Hi All,
English birder here just visiting HK for far too short a period (leave tomorrow). Anyway, had a walk around Tai Po Kau this morning and saw the following :

Olive backed Pipit 11
Grey-chinned Minivet 1
Red-whiskered Bulbul
Chinese Bulbul
Chestnut Bulbul 4
Lesser Shortwing 1  ;D
Oriental Magpie Robin 2
Japanese Thrush 1 male
Grey-backed Thrush 1 male
Streaked-breasted Scimitar Babbler 1
Rufous-capped Babbler 5
Grey-cheeked Fulvetta 6+ (isn't this unusual?)
Black-throated Laughingthrush 2
Silver-eared Mesia 20+
Red-billed Leiothrix 3
Asian Stubtail Warbler 1  ;D
Common Tailorbird 1
Pallas's Leaf Warbler 3
Yellow-browed Warbler 10+
Great Tit 6 (no Yellow-cheeked  :'( )
Velvet-fronted Nuthatch 4
Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker 1+
Fork-tailed Sunbird 6
Japanese White-eye +
Large-billed Crow 1

On the 7th in Kowloon Park I saw the following:

Peregrine 1
Grey-backed Thrush 1 female

Is there much else in here at the moment please? I note the photo of Slaty-legged Crake in the new excellent photographic guide was taken in there, was this passing through or are they regular?
Lastly where is Kowloon Hill Catchment please?

Hope this is OK and if anybody would like any further info on any of the above sightings then please contact me.

All the best and stay safe!

Hi Marcus,

All  the birds you saw were regular things, even the Fulvettas  really, with the exception of Lesser Shortwing, which, though several have been heard in TPK in recent winters, (a) has not  been heard very much at all there this winter, as far as I know, and (b) is very rarely actually seen (assume you did).

Slaty-legged Crake has been seen in KP on at least three occasions, at least two, I think, having taken up residence for several weeks or so during late winter, and one being at the height of spring migration. They breed widely in the NT (esp. NE) but are rarely seen.

Reports on this board give a pretty good picture of what's about at the moment - quite a bit really with winter species remaining and some early spring passage migrants arriving. However, March generally tends to be a bit of a lull, between winter proper and spring (which in bird terms sreally tarts during the last five days or so in March usually).

Kowloon Hills Catchwater is mainly east of Tai Po Road just over the brow of the hills on the NT side.

Hope this helps and that you get back to HK some time.

Mike Turnbull

Kowloon Catchment Area is the area surrounding Kowloon Reservoir, Kowloon Byewash Reservoir and Shek Lei Pui Reservoir. These 3 reservoirs are to the west of Tai Po Road in an area commonly called "Monkey Hill". The entrance road is halfway between 51 and 52 Milestone . The road goes to a firing range and a wireless station

You are of course right, Bob, in your fuller description than I gave of what constitutes Kowloon (Reservoirs/Hills) Water Catchment, but I assumed Marcus meant the Kowloon Hills Catchwater walk, where most of the birds reported from that area are seen, I believe, e.g. the Forest Wagtail that has been seen there recently.

That is on the other side of Tai Po Road from the reservoirs, ie the east side.

Just seeking to clarify, in case Marcus wants to go there during the rest of his stay.

That's right Mike, I beleive one walk  is called the Eagles Nest Nature Trail and the walk along the catchment Nullah is a part of the Wilson Trail and it comes out opposite the carpark at Kowloon Reservoir.

Watch out for monkeys and illegal imigrants
