Title: Colour-ringed white-shouldered starlings ¦³¦âÀôªº¦ÇIÙʳ¾
Post by johnallcock on Mar 15th, 2006, 1:32pm
Earlier this winter, the Hong Kong ringing group marked a number of white-shouldered starlings using colour rings.

The aim of this is to investigate the local movements, especially with respect to breeding/wintering areas (is the HK population resident, or are different birds involved at different times of year?)

The birds are likely to start moving to breeding grounds over the next couple of weeks, so it is worth all birders and photographers keeping their eyes open for any colour-ringed individuals among flocks of starlings.

Birds should have one colour ring over the usual metal ring on the right leg (so far these have all been white)and three colour rings on the left leg - the pattern of these rings allows individual identification of the birds.

If you are fortunate enough to see one of these birds, please report it to me (jallcock @asiaecol. com.hk).
Obviously, I will require details on the date and location of the bird (as detailed as possible please!) and the pattern of the colour rings. Also, any other information you noted about the bird, especially sex, behaviour, and details of any other birds it is associating with (numbers and species)

Good luck looking out for these birds!

A reminder for anyone to keep an eye open for colour-ringed white-shouldered starlings.  These birds are now breeding and it would be interesting to find out where!

If anyone finds some breeding starlings it would be worth checking for colour rings - the white ring on the right leg is obvious even a some distance, and the combination of three rings on the left leg is readable if you get good views (and allows individual identification)

I have so far located the nests of two individuals at Kam Tin but there are more out there to find (31 ringed so far this year)

If you are lucky enough to find any (or if anyone gets any photos) please contact me.

Thank you

Such a good photo of this starling allows us to identifiy this individual (red-yellow-white on the left leg, white over metal on the right leg). This individual was ringed at Kam Tin on 29th April 2006. I also saw it in the same area in late May, and as Kwan shows it is still present in mid-June.

One interesting observation from Kwan's e-mail to me is that the bird may now be using a different nest site from the one I observed previously (perhaps for a second attempt?)

Any further sightings (of this or other individuals) would be very useful.

The White Shoulder Starling was seen again carrying food on 30 June in the same area.
