7.20-7.50 am 30/3/06

Japanese Thrush 1M
Grey-backed Thrush 1M
Daurian Redstart 1F

There were at least another 10 thrushes moving around in a small area, flying overhead and calling but these were the only ones I could clearly see.  Most of the activity was at the upper lawn area just below the carpark.

There was a great tit investigating seepage holes in the retaining wall- could it have been looking for a nest site?

Quite quiet this morning as it was very breezy but no mist.

Only bird of interest this morning was the grey-backed thrushes.  Again just below the upper lawn area.  Lots of movement only clearly saw two male grey-backed.  There are a few trees flowering and there seems to be some fruit too so that must be what is pulling them in. If I could stay longer, I'm sure I could see more!

Also yellow-browed warbler, crested and chinese bulbul, japanese white-eye, magpie robin, yellow-bellied prinia, great tit, blue magpie.

A few grey-backed thrushes around today as well in the same area, plus a male Blue and White Flycatcher by the roundabout lower down the hill.

7.30-8.05 am 4/4/06 Misty!

An unusual warbler was seen at the top of the Governor's Walk (below the pagoda- it was flitting around in the azeleas and trees on the very top of the Governor's Walk path).

I watched this along with another birder and neither of us were confident of the id.

Initially I thought Arctic Warbler but it was not like one I had seen before.  I'll list my notes- probably not enough for a firm id but I'm happy with any suggestions.

Phylloscopus sp

Main odd feature:  white outer tail feathers, the tail was worn and the plumage was generally dull.

Long, heavy cream/buff supercilium extended right to back of head.
No coronal stripe, head looked "capped"
Heavy cream/buff single wing bar- no hint of a second wing bar
Tail, relatively long, white outer tail feathers
Bill long, heavy.
Legs dark
Rump plain- same colour as the back, dull green
Throat, belly non-descript, cream

Habit: very active, constantly moving through foliage.  Hovered twice at tips of branches.  Constantly calling "tsip", also sang constantly

Also seen: Red-tailed Robin
Not a single thrush heard today!
