Title: Mai Po yesterday 26th, May 五月廿六日米埔 Post by Neil on May 27th, 2006, 8:31am It's almost the end of the season and there were only about 300 migrating birds at the high tide on # 16/17 , including about 100 Pied Avocets. I was surprised to see a large number of Terek Sandpipers still there (50) as well as 20 Great Knots. A Swinhoe's Egret (non-breeding) flew in about 11.00 am and I was lucky to get my best photo yet of a White-Winged Tern (only 1 in breeding color ). On the way out Bena pointed out the Pheasant-Tailed Jacana to me at Hide 9. We had to go to the third level as it was at the back left. This was the first time for me. Neil ps these were digiscoped from 80 -100 metres Mai Po Nature Reserve, Hong Kong, China. 26/05/06 Olympus 7070wz plus Swarovski STS80HD scope and Sw 30x eyepiece and DCA adapter http://www.pbase.com/neilfif11/image/60811107.jpg http://www.pbase.com/neilfif11/image/60811105.jpg http://www.pbase.com/neilfif11/image/60811099.jpg http://www.pbase.com/neilfif11/image/60811106.jpg |

Title: Re: Mai Po yesterday 26th, May 五月廿六日米埔 Post by David_Diskin on May 29th, 2006, 9:11pm Allen - As I've looked at the photographs and seen your question, perhaps I can offer a brief reply. There are 3 White-winged Terns in the first picture - a breeding-plumaged bird and a non-breeding plumaged bird at the bottom and another non-breeding bird at top right. The head pattern of the non-breeding birds (a vertical black stripe behind the eye) is distinctive. Neil - Nice photos! dave |
