The old magpie nest was deserted since last May. I was surprised to find in early December that a pair of magpies were starting a new nest at the Black-necked Starlings' light post ¡V using materials from the old nest!

Both partners have complete tail feathers this time. I call the bird with longer tail and bigger body Mr M, and his mate Mrs M. Not sure if they are the same couple as last time.

Sometimes they will share a moment together for the sunrise.

Although the new nest was far from complete, the old nest was almost gone by last Sunday.

Comparison with an old shot indicate that a lot of material is not accounted for ¡Vhad they been taken away by yet another couple? In any case, I trust they have achieved 95% recycling with the demolition.

I can still hear the Large-billed Crows occasionally. Will they tolerate the Magpies this time?

The Magpies continued to build the nest since the last report.

The old nest is within 40m of the new one and at the same height. This save a lot of effort in material delivery.

They also picked up some elsewhere.

From my limited observations on weekends, the Magpies were most active building the nest before 10:00 a.m. and were seldom seen after that. However, they would return in the evening to take a brief look before flying to their night roost.

The Large-billed Crows finally turned up yesterday. Cawing loudly, they flew around the perimeter of the playground and stopped briefly on the old nest.

The Magpies kept on working as if they were not there.

One of the Large-billed Crows perched on a Horsetail tree, making calls repeatedly as if to make it clear that who's the Boss.

As it was time to go to work, no further observation was made on what happened next.

As usual, I turned on the camera this morning (25/12/04). Oops ¡V where's the nest¡H
After a brief confirmation, what I had been worrying for nearly one year had at last happened ¡V most probably the nest was removed by the management of the playground yesterday for some reasons.

During the visit to the playground this afternoon, only two twigs were left on the work platform and more were scattered on the ground next to the floodlight post.

It is a pity that this sequel has to end sadly in less than a month.
