Title: Blatant Disturbance to the Black Kite Nest
Post by Karin on May 6th, 2005, 12:00am
Blatant Disturbance to the Black Kite Nest

A photographer was recently discovered by our group to be disturbing an active Black Kite nest in the urban area. The photographer was positioned unacceptably close to the nest and taking pictures for a long period of time. The level of  disturbance was so blatant that it drew the attention of other curious pedestrians. We are here to register our formal complaint to this irresponsible and selfish behavior.

The tolerance of the birds to such disturbance is likely to be relatively lower during the breeding season. The adult Kite is at a higher level of alertness and such that it may not dare to return to the nest to take care of the eggs and chicks as a result of the disruptive activities of the photographer. In the worst case scenario, the adult may even abandon the nest if it believes the nest is no longer safe.

We therefore strongly urge all bird watchers and photographers to remain at a sufficient distance so as not to disturb any active bird nests and chicks and
also not to disclose the exact location of a nest to anybody. If you believe any nest is at potential risk, please contact HKBWS immediately.

We believe all of us are bird lovers. Therefore we should respect, treasure and actively protect everything about birds and their environment. Staying too close to active bird nests, using flashlights while taking pictures and making too much noise can cause irreversible harm to the nests. This general lack of awareness and unacceptable level of behavior amongst some bird birdwatchers and photographers have been discovered from repeat incidents recently. We again warn and will seek to censure those culprits who continue to cause disturbance to the bird nests.

We urge everyone to conduct themselves appropriately when appreciating and photographing birds in their natural habitat. Please be more considerate in not
creating disturbance to the birds.
