China has created 22 new national nature reserves, bringing the total to 265, covering 91.851 million hectares or 9.6% of the country, the State Environmental Protection Agency has announced.

Also China now says it will consult the public on the environmental impact of construction projects. The move was heralded by the outspoken deputy head of SEPA, Pan Yue. http://tinyurl.com/g49md

Less encouragingly - Avian flu may hit Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province in the spring as migratory birds stop in the province during their annual migration, government officials and ornithologists warned.
