18 SEABIRD SPECIES AFFECTED BY 'PRESTIGE' OIL SPILL IN SPAIN

Monday 18th November, 2002 -- More than 50 volunteers co-ordinated by SEO/BirdLife have identified 18 species of seabird affected by the 'Prestige' oil spill off the Spanish Galician coast.

The volunteers carried out their monitoring yesterday and counted more than 250 individual seabirds of 18 different species that had been affected by the spill. The most commonly affected species were Yellow-legged Gull, Black-backed Gull, Shag, Black-headed Gull, Northern Gannet and Razorbill, and to a lesser extent Common Guillemot and Manx Shearwater.

Most of these species are now migrating through the Galician coast and breed in the United Kingdom and France. Many seabirds are now in the peak of their migratory season, particularly alcids and gannets.

SEO/BirdLife and WWF/Adena are collaborating closely with the regional environmental authorities (Xunta de Galicia). International experts on marine catastrophes from the Ergos Programme and International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) have moved to the area to help with oiled bird recovery. Other international bodies have offered support, such as Medmaravis, Project Blue Sea and Sea Alarm Foundation.

The Regional Ministry of Environment has acknowledged to the General Director of SEO/BirdLife, Alejandro Sanchez, the assistance of conservation NGOs and volunteers in the effort to minimise the environmental effects of the oil spill.

Attn BirdLife Partners, Partners Desginate, Affiliates and Secretariat Staff

As many of you will know the "Prestige" oil tanker has now reportedly started to break up and sink.

A BBC story has got the latest informaton on this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2487739.stm

The spill is being described as a major environmetnal disaster in the UK media.

SEO/BirdLife are monitoring seabirds to record the numbers and species that have been oiled.

SEO/BirdLife also participated in press conference this morning in La Coruna which was well attended by the media. Carlota Viado is working on a new press release which I hope to be able to send out soon.

In the meantime we have produced the attached briefing about the species that are at risk from the spill.

I will send out another update when there is new information to report.

Thanks, Michael
