How do you feel about this event?

1) Angry
2) Frustrated.
3) No reaction
4) Delighted
5) Others...

You can have more than one choice.

I am Delighted to see Owlet-nightjar post so many meaningful questions to make us think what Conservation is.

The event, from the negative side, is loss of trees but from the positive side, it may be the start of new life without consideration of the cause(s) of fire.  But must the fire be caused by the careless people or can it be other reasons (e.g. low RH in sunny days)?  Unfortunately the photo cannot tell.  Of course, normally it is unhappy to see this event esp. it occurs near your house!!

Clear the grass around each tomb before every Ching Ming and Chung Yeung Festival.

People loves to burn the grass around the tombs for site maintenance.

According to a reliable source, there were over 40 reports of hill fires in the N.T. during the Chung Yeung weekend.  Some of the fires burned for 24 hours with the Fire Services unable to stop them.

******************************************************

There is an unexpected effect that the scars caused by the mountain-bikes have acted as a fire break in places.

According to David Melville the ex-Director of WWF  of all the hill fires in Hong Kong 100% are started by people.

Lets post more pictures and CC to AFCD.

Also I think the Govt used to have a committee to monitor hill fires. but I have not heard about this for the last few years.

Cheers
Mike

There were over 100 cases of hill fire on 22/10/04. Some 20 people were stranded by fire after visiting graves at Tai Po. All were saved.

At least 56 cases of hill fires broke out yesterday, suspected to be caused by offerings left unattended by grave-sweepers. The worst fire, occurring at Penny¡¦s Bay, was still raging until midnight yesterday.

In addition to the fireworks, visitors to Disneyland should have had an additional treat to this annual Hong Kong tradition.
