You are invited to the following programme:

Briefing on the proceedings of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-7)
by Dr. Michael Lau, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden

The seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP-7) took place in Kuala Lumpur from 9 to 20 February 2004, and was attended by delegates from KFBG.

Top issues at the conference included the role of protected areas in the preservation of biological diversity, the transfer of technology and technological cooperation, and the biological diversity of mountain ecosystems, as well as the implementation of the target set at the sixth meeting to achieve a significant reduction in the rate of loss of biodiversity by 2010. The COP is also expected to follow up on the call for action issued at the World Summit on Sustainable Development to negotiate an international regime on access to, and sharing of, the benefits derived from the utilization of genetic resources, within the framework of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD).

The KFBG delegates who attended the COP-7 would very much like to share information collected at the conference with others who are involved in conservation.  We would also like to take this opportunity to exchange views regarding the CBD in relation to Hong Kong.
